ABOUT US
Beneath It All is an AFDA Experimental Student Production. The film will be streamed via the AFDA Online Experimental Festival. Beneath It All is also a completely remote shoot.
The film follows a young woman, Layaan, in solitude. When she realises she is not alone, she searches her house and is confronted with increasingly more surreal experiences. These push her to the edge, where she is forced to confront what truly needs to be solved: a deep sense of self-hatred brought on by the external, materialistic world.
As filmmakers our aim is have individuals to question their social expectation in their lives and how this effects their own self-love and self-acceptance. For more on our team visit the MEET OUR TEAM tab.
Directors' Statement
“Thereʼs a lot of noise on the Internet. As a 20 year old in todayʼs age, that noise can sometimes be deafening, seemingly drowning out everything else in life. As a kid, it was quiet. I searched for answers much like every child of my generation: parents, friends, teachers. When those resources ran out, the Internet had an endless library of information. Of course, a decade later and we realise that that library wasnʼt necessarily filled with the best of information. It wasnʼt always this way. Before everyone shouted their beliefs - funny, no one whispers online - and proclaimed them as monolithic truths for all to follow, there was a stillness to life. You had to slow down to get answers , but in this online space where everyone is constantly a performer and audience member, melded together, answers have to always be readily provided. Issues like self love and what it takes to truly look at yourself, the good and bad, are romanticised, turned into trends and photo challenges. This is not an admonishment of social media. It is a commentary on manʼs ability to look everywhere but within himself for contentment, happiness and divinity. The painful process of true self love - honest, proper introspection and acceptance - is one I have struggled with, learnt from, hated and sworn by for the past couple years. This film is a portrayal of what happens when we step away from the noise, and embrace the silence beneath it all.”
